　　英語國際音標共有48個，分元音和輔音（下章節詳述）。元音有20個，分單元音和雙元音兩大類；單元音中，按發音部位可分為前元音、中元音和后元音；按發音和嘴型大小、時間長短可分為長元音和短元音。如圖：
